Patty Reay

Senior Staff Instructor

Patty entered the firearms world in 2018 to provide for her own personal safety. She learned firsthand how empowering it is to have the tools to be your own first responder, but also how difficult it can be for someone completely new to firearms to get oriented and feel confident operating their firearm safely and effectively. She has a practical, real-life focus to training and a supportive, approachable, “regular-person” teaching style.

Patty brings a background of 18 years in corporate training events to the NTAC program. She creates a supportive, low-stress learning environment for students to build a good foundation and set them up for success. She has adopted Todd Nielsen’s practical focus, using strategies and techniques that prepare students for real-life situations they may actually encounter where they live, work and go to school.  She enjoys seeing students transform from feeling uncertain or nervous into feeling excited, empowered and proud of themselves for successfully learning to use their firearm.

Patty is the Women’s Handgun Program designer and manager. She knows women sometimes just feel more comfortable learning from and with other women in a safe, supportive, low stress environment. She understands firsthand the unique take that women may have on their need to be able defend themselves. Taking action to make themselves safer is important to many women, whether they are learning to use a firearm to join family members in a shared activity, or to address threats to their safety.

Patty is a co-manager of USPSA and IDPA indoor competitive shooting clubs with Frank Xu, providing on-site and logistical support for the events. She initially attended her first competition for “stress inoculation,” to test her shooting skills and gear under a little more pressure than normally possible at the range. She discovered that competition shooting provides a dynamic, exciting and challenging way for someone to push themselves to greater levels of skill. She would love to see more ladies join her!

Patty also works as an NFA manager at a gun store, helping customers navigate the numerous steps necessary to complete the approval process to take home highly regulated firearms like suppressors or short barreled rifles and shotguns.

Patty volunteers with Fight Back Nation, an organization that has trainid thousands of K-12 teachers and administrators with defensive techniques to prepare for and fight back against an active shooter at their school.

Patty is also a certified Utah Concealed Firearms Permit class instructor. She teaches these classes with an emphasis on understanding principles of the law through real-life examples and scenarios.

She is a USCCA certified instructor, an NRA Chief Range Safety Officer, a certified Utah Concealed Firearms Permit class instructor.
