DESCRIPTION

This class enhances and builds upon fundamental skills taught in Beginner Handgun and adds new variations to help you gain more familiarity and confidence with your firearm. After reviewing safety and marksmanship fundamentals, this class will introduce more complex drills and scenarios, including drawing from the holster, drawing from concealment, shooting while moving, and an introduction to shooting from behind barricades. Students will become more proficient and confident with their marksmanship and gun handling skills, which will take them to the intermediate level and prepare them for Defensive Handgun and the advanced courses beyond.

Learning to draw from the holster is a particularly important skillset that opens the door to safely carrying a firearm in the real world, and allows us to introduce other important skillsets in class such as moving and shooting drills. Practicing these skills will increase a student’s level of competence and confidence with their firearm. You will learn how to safely use the five-count draw stroke and get numerous reps under the watchful eye of your instructor as you develop this critical skill. You will learn correct technique as well as how to avoid the most common mistakes that could result in injury to yourself as you draw and reholster.

Then we will introduce drawing your gun while you're on the move, maintaining a heavy emphasis on safety. You will practice changing magazines, both with an empty gun and tactical reloads, and learn how to stow and manage your mags for quick access on the move. We will also introduce shooting from behind barricades with an eye to what you might encounter in a self-defense situation.

We will watch security camera footage of real-life scenarios and talk about principles that apply to the drills in class and students’ lives outside of class. We will review how to articulate the legal use of force during drills throughout the course.
