WHY GET A UTAH CONCEALED FIREARM PERMIT?

With recent changes to Utah laws, a concealed firearm permit is not necessary to carry concealed in many locations. However, there are many important reasons to be a concealed carry permit holder!

  • You put yourself at serious legal risk if you carry a firearm without knowing the laws.
  • Learn where you can and can’t carry your firearm, even if you have a permit.
  • Learn what criteria you must be able to articulate before you can legally use deadly force.
  • Know when and how brandishing a firearm is considered de-escalation instead of a violation of the law.
  • Recent (2025) updates to the legal code now require you to have a permit to carry your firearm in a daycare facility, K-12 school, or post-secondary institution of higher learning.
  • Carry concealed in 36 other states and Puerto Rico, where the Utah permit is accepted.
  • Demonstrates to law enforcement, when you need to interact with them, that you are a law-abiding citizen. Permit holders are background checked and approximately 75% less likely to commit a crime.
  • Allows you to have a loaded long gun in your vehicle.
  • Know what to do when law enforcement arrives after a self-defense incident.
  • See below for many other important laws discussed in class!

WHAT TO BRING

  • State Issued Photo ID: a) State Issued Driver License or b) State Issued ID Card.
  • Utah Non-Residents: Copy of your concealed firearm permit (with expiration date visible) from your resident state, IF your state has a reciprocity arrangement with Utah. (You are required to have one in your own state first in that case.) If state of residence doesn’t accept Utah permits, this requirement doesn’t apply. See the list of states in the FAQ section. You are considered a resident of whichever state issued your ID.
  • US Citizens Born Outside The USA: Bring ONE of the following: a) copy of U.S. issued born abroad certificate, b) copy of valid US passport, or c) copy of naturalization certificate.
  • Non-Citizens: Must bring ONE of the following, (whichever is applicable): a) copy of permanent resident card or b) copy of 1-94 paperwork along with copy of hunting license.
  • K-12 school employees are not charged the $52 state application fee for your permit. Bring a letter from your school administration on letterhead stating that you currently work there to apply for the permit at no charge.
  • Active duty military and spouse stationed in Utah are not charged the state fee for a permit. Bring a copy of your active duty orders showing that you are stationed in Utah.
  • Background check issues: If you have something in your history that will come up in the background check, like expunged records, which will raise a red flag to examiners but does not disqualify you from holding a permit, bring a copy of applicable court records and/or a written explanation to include with your application.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

What is the state application fee and how do I pay it?
The state of Utah charges a non-refundable application fee of $52 ($87 for non-Utah residents). Include a credit card number on the application to cover that charge, or write a check payable to BCI. You can also take the application to the BCI office in Taylorsville in person, or mail it yourself.

What is the minimum age for a Concealed Firearm Permit (CFP)?
Utah’s standard permit is for people 21 years of age and older. There is a provisional permit for those 18-20 years of age (with a few additional restrictions) that has to be changed to a standard permit on their 21st birthday. The application and fees are the same for both standard and provisional permits. You can take the class when you are still 17 as long as you submit your application within one year of taking the class. Applications are not accepted before your 18th birthday.

What are the differences between the Provisional CFP and the Standard CFP?
The Provisional CFP expires on the holder’s 21st birthday. The Provisional CFP does not allow the holder to carry in primary and secondary schools (UCA 76-11-205 and UCA 76-11-205.5). Only 20 other states have reciprocity to allow you to carry concealed there with this provisional permit. Please check the states you are planning to visit to see applicable local laws. It is the responsibility of the permit holder to know and understand the applicable laws for their home state and any state they plan to visit.

How long is the permit good for?
It expires 5 years from the issue date. You can renew it online for $20 up to 90 days before it expires, and up to 1 year after the expiration date (with late fee), without having to take the class again.

If my permit is expired, do I need to retake the class?
If your permit expired more than 1 year ago, you will have to submit a new application and re-take the class.

Does Utah recognize any other states’ permits?
Yes, Utah recognizes ALL other states’ concealed firearms permits.

Can I get a Utah permit if I’m not a Utah resident?
Yes, but if your state is on the list below that has a reciprocal agreement with Utah to accept our permit, you have to obtain a permit from your own state BEFORE you get approved for a Utah permit.

What other states recognize the Utah permit for carrying in their state (aka reciprocity)?
Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado*, Delaware, Florida*, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine*, Michigan*, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire*, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania*, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and Puerto Rico. (* means you have to be a Utah resident for them to accept it.)

How long do I have to send in the application?
You have one year from the date of the class to get it to BCI. Our instructor will get it to BCI for you after class, but you can hold onto the application if you wish, and submit it yourself later.

How long does it take to get the permit back?
Plan on about 60 days from when your application is first processed. Your credit card will be charged on the day BCI starts to process it.

What on the background check would disqualify me from getting a permit?
Applicants need to demonstrate proof of good character… whereas the applicant has not been convicted of a) a felony (juvenile felonies drop off within 7-10 years); b) any crime of violence; c) any offense involving the use of alcohol; d) any offenses involving the unlawful use of narcotics or other controlled substances; e) any offenses involving moral turpitude; f) any offense involving domestic violence; or g) has not been adjudicated by a court of a state or of the United States as mentally incompetent, unless the adjudication has been withdrawn or reversed; and h) is qualified to purchase and possess a firearm pursuant to Section 76-10-503 and federal law.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Upon completion of this course, we HIGHLY recommend learning how to use a firearm safely and effectively to defend yourself and/or your loved ones. For most people, our Beginner Handgun course is a great place to start. For those who have never used a firearm or are particularly nervous about guns, our Intro to Handgun class may be more appealing.

If you plan to actually use your newly acquired concealed firearm permit and carry a firearm for self defense, you really owe it to yourself to attend Beginner Handgun, Handgun Proficiency, and Defensive Handgun at a minimum. And if you really want to give yourself the best chance of success if you are ever involved in a lethal force encounter, you should really consider attending our Shooting Around Barricades, Low Light Handgun, Handgun Manipulations, and any of our Skills Maintenance courses.
